Where Are You? (ENNY 15)
Where is everyone? I can see from our stats that many people are reading these blog entries, we’ve also had some comments, but there are far too many silent readers and not enough comment. Or maybe you’re jealous of all the restaurants I am being taken to? Well, to rub it in more, last night we went to Red Lobster and ate seafood galore. Superb! Among other things I had some of the Alaskan King Crab legs. Mmmmm! I am in Australia in September for my first visit and everyone Aussie I know has told me once I get there I’ll never look back, that no country will ever be the same. So why aren’t the many Aussie readers of this blog speaking out as I sing America’s praises, then? This Pom wants to hear how much better Aus (Oz?) is, and also from Americans defending the land of the free (and the fat). And what about those Brits who have been here? Where are those comments?

Cal,
Well I must confess to a touch of green eyed jealousy. The food sounds fantastic – and so over the top too. I have been to LA a number of times as my sister lives there. I clearly remember ordering a steak once in a ‘Claim Jumper’ restaurant. Honestly. I have never seen anything like it. I am convinced the chef just cut the animal’s ears and tail off and then just fried him up for me. It was massive.
I am intrigued to hear you are planning to visit Australia this year. I have visited twice – mainly Sydney, but I have ventured up to Brisbane too. I can confirm that what you have heard is correct. It is an awesome place. The people are great, the scenery is fantastic, the weather generally magnificent. The flight of course is eternal. Don’t forget to pack some good books to read on your flight and of course your surf board.
Keep up the blogs they are great. Perhaps you should publish them in a book under the title ‘An Englishman Who Ate New York’.

Yes Australia is, I think, the best place to live in. Although, I haven’t been outside of this country so I can’t really compare it to anything, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else to be honest with you. I do know that the Australian people are a crazy bunch. We call a spade a spade, and we really do have the attitude “she’ll be right mate!”
Our country is not bad considering it was colonised by P.O.M.S (prisoner’s of Her Majesties Service).
Anyway Calvin, I really enjoy your posts, even though I have been flat out like a lizard drinking … keep them up mate

Dave, let me know of any alternatives to break up the flight. I heard you could go via Japan or Singapore for the same price with an overnight in either place, which sounds good. Concerning ears etc, an apt description. I’m sure I’ve eaten two whole cows this week. Not convinced, though, either of you, that Aus is all it is cracked up to be. Been told I can have as many meals out as I like in order to prove the point, so naturally will be assuming the country is complete rubbish `til they’ve tried really hard to sell it to me…

Cal,
I have visited Aus twice and both times I flew via Los Angeles (with Air New Zealand). My sister lives in LA and so it is an opportunity to break up the flight and have a week with her en route. I believe flying west takes fractionally longer than going East. The first time I went to Aus I also managed to have a 10 day stop in Raratonga (Cook Islands) on the way. The place is absolutely stunning, it is paradise. I highly recommend a stop there. You can snorkel with amazing coloured fish in the morning and then eat them for your lunch !!!!!
Flying west also provides the opportunity for a flight over the international date line. This is a great opportunity to waste time frying your brain, wondering how on earth it is possible to leave LA early in the morning, have a 14 hour flight and get to Sydney a day and a half later. Of course on your way home, you can leave Aus and arrive in LA before you left Sydney – superb. I appreciate that the concept is the same as gaining/losing an hour on a flight to Europe BUT this is on such an epic scale, that you could send yourself crazy considering it – especially when you are already tired and jetlagged.
Aus is great, you will love it I am sure.
