As I regularly write urging Pastors and Students to exhort their congregations to stand up and speak out against proposed laws and policies which are in danger of criminalising Christians…

Killing out of kindness?

A survey for the BBC* has found that 73% of people believe friends or relatives of someone who is terminally ill should be able to assist their suicide.

And Terry Pratchett says the UK should set up assisted suicide “tribunals” which may grant people legal permission to end their lives.

So how do you answer the question -

“Should assisted suicide be legal?”

We’re called to be salt and light, what will you do?

The following petition has been set up on the downing street website:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Remove the current employment provisions set out in Schedule 9, Paragraph 2, subsection 8 of the Equality Bill (the occupational requirements relating to sex, marriage and sexual orientation for the purposes of organised religion). These restrict the rights of religious bodies to employ personnel who conform to their teachings only if their duties are confined to worship activities or the explanation of doctrine.

A Question of Value

Apologies for my few months absence from the blog, the challenges of ministry have kept from leaping into print quite as much as I should.

Certainly the pressures on the Christian church and the assault on faith from various quarters hasn’t disappeared, as the likes of The Christian Institute and Christian Concern For Our Nation, thankfully keep telling us.

And I am very happy to “get back into the groove” and raise awareness of up and coming legislation or other threats, but it seemed to me that I should perhaps first ask whether there is any value in this? Perhaps maybe you receive regular updates elsewhere? So before I start the New Year with enthusiastic blogging, please could you let me know….

….is there real value here?

Assisted Suicide

The Director of Public Prosecutions issued his interim guidelines on assisted suicide on September 23rd 2009.

Though the guidelines are to go through a period of consultation before becoming policy, Christian leaders and legal experts have grave misgivings.

I’d like to suggest two things here:

  • Please pray, lobby, discuss and generally enter in to the debate.
  • I would be interested to see comments from you all on your thoughts and views on this from both ‘gut instinct’ and your considered biblical understanding. Perhaps you think this is a no brainer? If so can you articulate why to non Christians? These are the ethical debates that today’s Pastors are bombarded with, and people are looking for real answers – tough but a great opportunity too…

EU Equal Treatment Directive

There is a significant risk to free speech across Europe.

This directive is due to be considered and voted on within the next couple of months. If passed it will be both complex and far reaching in its ability to silence Christians.

Christian Concern for our Nation has produced an excellent information pack, which can be downloaded here. Please encourage your churches to Pray, Write and Lobby as well as to discuss this serious issue with as many people as possible.

If you need to find which MEP or MP to write to you can find their details by following this link: http://www.writetothem.com
