An Easter ‘thought for the day’.

In Ephesians 1:18-20, St Paul wrote:

‘I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honour at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms’ (New Living Translation).

No words of my own could suffice so well as an Easter ‘thought for the day’ than these! Christ is risen! And his people rise to new life with him, and this life is eternal (Romans 6:23). It’s incredible to ponder the fact that the same power which brought Christ back from death can be at work in us too.

I’d like to wish all staff and students with KEDS (and anyone else reading this) a blessed and joyful Easter.

Christ is risen: he is risen indeed, Alleluia!

Incidentally, Carson’s Exegetical Fallacies is a fabulous study of some of the most common hermeneutical fallacies that exegetes face when interpreting scripture. The book identifies common grammatical, lexical, cultural, theological, and historical mistakes that preachers, pastors and students make frequently.

Colossians Commentaries

A while ago, I put together a quick guide to commentaries on Colossians for the benefit of a newsletter that subsequently never went to print. Here, if anybody is interested, are some very brief remarks on recommended commentaries on Colossians from an evangelical perspective. This list is restricted to technical or semi-technical works: excellent devotional commentaries include R. C. The High Court discriminates against Christians….

In a landmark ruling by the high court, an individual’s sexual preference has been given greater importance in law than another individual’s right to live out their Christian faith – BBC, Daily Telegraph.

I assert that this ruling will have a significant and negative impact on Christians in the UK…

Ekballo – Sent Out Or Driven Out??

Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary defines the Greek compound verb ἐκβάλλω as meaning ‘to cast, drive, expel, send or thrust out of’. The word is a composite of 2 Greek words, namely, the preposition ‘ἐκ’ meaning ‘of’ or ‘from, out’ and the verb ‘βάλλω’ meaning ‘cast, drive etc’. Once the various personal endings have been accounted for, the verb occurs 81 times in the Greek New Testament. The majority usage of ἐκβάλλω and βάλλω in the New Testament are mainly within the synoptic gospels, with a dozen or so occurrences spread across John’s gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. In addition ἐκβάλλω also appears once in Galatians, whilst βάλλω occurs several times in Revelation. For the main part ἐκβάλλω is translated as ‘cast out’ in the New Testament. It is exclusively the verb used when Jesus or his disciples ‘cast out’ demons. Consider the following examples:
